It's Islam's holiest(神聖的) site. Millions make the pilgrimage(朝聖) to the Grand Mosque(大清真寺) every year.
The pace of high-rise(高度建築) development in the city has led(導致) some to compare modern-day Mecca to Manhattan.
But archaeologists(考古學家) are angry that ancient(古老的) monuments(紀念碑) are being destroyed(摧毀) so rich visitors can be accommodated(容納) in luxury hotels.
The Saudi authorities(當局) say the demolition(拆遷) is necessary to cope(應付) with the ever-growing number(日益增多) of visitors.
